Something Old, Something New

Historic Aerials' image repository enables the curious to compare the past with the present.

At this year's ESRI User Conference, I had the pleasure of meeting Brett Perry and Jim Hall of NETR Real Estate Research and Information, which provides public records and title research tools. Company President Perry founded NETR (Nationwide Environmental Title Research) in the early '90s, helping those researching environmental concerns (e.g., Was this apartment complex built on the site of an old gas station?) during due diligence investigations. Later in the decade, the company began offering digitized copies of documents via the Internet, which led to the idea of making aerial imagery available online — and eventually, to Historic Aerials.

The specialized division of NETR launched a new Web site earlier this year, so users can browse the entire collection of imagery — which is approaching 250 terabytes — for free. They can compare aerial photographs from 10, 20, or even 90 years ago with their modern counterparts, and purchase the images they view. In addition to panning and zooming, users can compare any two years for a particular location, and drag a vertical slider bar back and forth to reveal the overlaid images. Internet Explorer users can also employ the dissolve feature to transition from one year to another. More»
