Map in a Snap

FortiusOne's new Web-based tool simplifies the process for cartographic neophytes.

A few months ago, FortiusOne publicly released the emphatically named Finder! beta, a browser-based application for sharing spatial data in shapefile, spreadsheet (CSV), and KML formats. According to CEO and founder Sean Gorman, there are currently more than 5,000 data sets in the system, ranging from agriculture to infrastructure to retail. Gorman reported that Finder! averages 20 to 60 uploads per day, and he expects that rate to increase. (Downloads, naturally, are more popular: they've logged 100,000 in the past two months.)

Now, the company has rounded out its GeoCommons platform with the launch of partner application Maker!, which was developed in collaboration with Axis Maps. Maker! helps users create maps with their own data sets, or public data uploaded to Finder! by others. The interface is designed to be intuitive for the uninitiated; users are guided through the process by a wizard (called "Map Brewer"), and assisted by instructional videos, a user manual, and quick-start examples. Newbies needn't fear investing hours in the process: Maker! promises "actionable maps in 5 minutes."

With this release, FortiusOne isn't trying to compete with full-featured GIS applications. Rather, the intent is to "provide a simple set of Web-based tools for non-technical users," said Gorman, and in so doing, "create a bridge between the GeoWeb and the GIS world." More»
